Sermon Notes: The Design of Man

The Design of Man is to Be Like God.

Review Last Week:

Genesis 1:26-27 (NKJV)
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Genesis 2:18 (NASB 2020)
18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

IMAGE: selem – צֶלֶם

ṣelem; to shade; a phantom, i.e. (figuratively) illusion, resemblance; hence, a representative figure, especially an idol: — image, vain shew.

LIKENESS: ḏemûṯ – דְּמוּת
resemblance; concretely, model, shape; adverbially, like: — fashion, like (-ness, as), manner, similitude.

DOMINION: râḏâ – רָדָה
to tread down, i.e. subjugate; specifically, to crumble off: — (come to, make to) have dominion, prevail against, reign, (bear, make to) rule,(-r, over), take.

☆ We were made in the image of God (a Spirit). Sin covered that image until we were flesh-led almost all the time.

Genesis 6:3 (NASB)
3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

☆ Jesus Came as the Image of the Invisible God

Colossians 1:15 (NKJV)
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

☆ As we BEHOLD Him, we are transformed into that image. As we look at His glory it reflects back upon us and CHANGES us.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV)
18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

☆ THIS IS PROGRESSIVE (From Glory to Glory)

As we get to know WHO He is and What He Does, we start to act like Him.

Ephesians 5:1 (NKJV)
1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.

John 5:19 (NKJV)
19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

☆☆☆ So, once again, we return to our main purpose of mankind: To KNOW and LOVE and WALK with God.

– As we walk with Him daily, encounter His glory often, imitate Him, we are transformed to look and act and be more like Him!

– Religion can’t accomplish this, only a consistent relationship with God.

☆☆☆ Examples: ☆☆☆

John 13:34-35
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Hebrews 11:3 (NLT)
3 By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.

☆ Compassion

Matthew 8:1-3 (NLT)
1 Large crowds followed Jesus as he came down the mountainside. 2 Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.” 3 Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.
